ScentWork for the Canine Nose
You asked for it… we did it!
What is ScentWork? A dog’s nose is 10000 times or more acute than ours. Scentwork allows your dog to enjoy its natural ability and desire to sniff. It’s a rewarding activity for the dog and the handler to continue building that bond and confidence. ScentWork is for all breeds of dogs, and all levels of handling experience are welcomed.
ScentWork is based on the work for drug detection dogs such as drug and bomb detection. In Scentwork, we use scents such as Birch, Anise, Clove and Cypress and turn it into an exciting sport for the handler and the dog, as they have to work together to find and communicate their hidden scent. There are different levels, challenges and even titles as you progress.
Our methodology is based on the years of experience from Pat Nolan who trains military and special operation detection dogs. Our instructor Jinny Jervey has trained side by side with Pat to learn and perfect the skills for our ScentWork For The Canine Nose class. Our Novice Scentwork course is a structured curriculum, specifically designed for introducing your dog to scent/odor, to reliably detect and alert, and to teach you the skills of handling and communicating as a team. Dogs will be able to apply their odor recognition ability to various venues such as container, buried, interior, and exterior searches. This step by step method insures a solid foundation so you can continue through all levels of detection for Scentwork. Jinny is an accomplished dog handler in the dog sports, plus, an obedience class instructor at Dog Trainers Workshop and has a true passion for ScentWork that she wants to share with you. To help get you started, we will give you free starter supplies the first night of class.
